And So It Begins...

The first 20 players have been called to Carson, California to begin training for the US - Mexico World Cup Qualifier on 2/11/09. So just who will be getting the nod to lace up against El Tri? May I have the envelope please?

(CUE DRUMROLL)

And the nominees are:

Goalkeepers:
Jon Busch (Chicago)
Will Hesmer (Columbus)
Matt Pickens (Colorado)

Defenders:
Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA)
Frankie Hejduk (Columbus)
Ugo Ihemelu (Colorado)
Chris Wingert (Salt Lake)
Marvell Wynne (Toronto)

Midfielders:
Brian Carroll (Columbus)
Ricardo Clark (Houston)
Eddie Gaven (Columbus)
Stuart Holden (Houston)
Jack Jewsbury (Kansas City)
Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA)
Robbie Rogers (Columbus)
John Thorrington (Chicago)

Forwards:
Brian Ching (Houston)
Kenny Cooper (Dallas)
Charlie Davies (Hammarby, Norway)
Chris Rolfe (Chicago)

Don't be shocked if the only players involved in any significant way are Kljestan, Ching, and Hejduk. Almost all of the starting 11, if not all of them, will be from the non U.S.-based players, who will begin arriving later this week. Still, given Klejstan and Ching's strong play, and the always gamey Hejduk's Columbus ties, it will be interesting to see the final roster. We'll keep you posted here.
