Cherundolo Sidelined?
Word out of Germany is that Steve Cherundolo hasn't been playing due to issues with his hip.
Were Dolo not able to go for the game on February 11th, who should get the start? One has to think Bob Bradley is giving strong consideration to Frankie Hejduk due to his ties to Columbus and his absurd work rate, nevermind his experience in this sort of game. Still, Marvell Wynne presents an equally exciting option for the US Nats due to his speed and progression over the last few seasons in MLS. The downside is that Wynne has not played in a game of this caliber previously, whereas Hejduk has been playing against Mexico since before it was cool.
Bottom line, I think Hejduk gets the nod due to his experience and the motivation he'll get from the home crowd, but as the qualifying progresses, I think Wynne will become the number 2 to Cherundolo before it's all said and done.

Today a Qualifier, Tomorrow the World (Cup)!
U.S. Soccer has officially announced their plans to bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. The winners of both bids will be announced in December of 2010, with the final proposals being made in May of that year.
Obviously, landing either one of these suckers would be a great thing for the U.S., so instead of talking about how hopeful I am about getting one of these bids, I'll instead mention a few other things I thought about when I saw this news.
1. What will MLS look like by then? The league will be over 20 years old at that point. Will we see teams that are independently run and financed? More or less league control? A salary cap? And how big will the stadiums be?
2. Will the U.S. Nats be competing at the level of the top programs, and possibly have hoisted the Cup by then? Or will we be duking it out with the Ghanas and South Koreas of the world?
3. Finally, I will be either 36 or 40 at the time of this Cup. While it is daunting to think about what you'll be doing in 10-15 years' time, at least I know I'll have plenty of time to start accruing the necessary vacation days.
Add your thoughts below.

You Make the Call!
The US Men's National Team blog has a cool contest out there right now. They want you to do your best Max Bretos impersonation and call some of the biggest goals in U.S Soccer history as you would have, had you been the one in the Network T.V. blazer at the time.
(And with all due respect to the otherwise wonderful Bretos, can we please refrain from the gratuitous use of the phrase "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" during these videos? Thanks.)
If you need help figuring out how to edit audio and the like, check the link out in the first paragraph, which gives you a better idea. From what I can tell, there is no winning prize, except that every video they like will be added to a compilation of user vids from the contest. So you'll at least get 15 seconds of fame.
Personally, I would kill for someone to do a Harry Cary impersonation on one of these videos. If you have the voice down, and are good with audio editing software, how about ya do me a solid and make that happen, OK?

You've Got Questions, We've Got Voodoo.

So, perhaps by now you've heard about the promotion a Mexican newspaper is running that offers it's readers a free US Men's National Team voodoo doll that Mexican fans can stick with pins, apparently to help aid them in venting their frustrations.
And the company that was going to offer these charming little toys? Oh, that would be Radio Shack, which is of course, a company based in the U.S. Seriously, Radio Shack, did you think no one would notice? More importantly, what other pseudo science items do you now stock? Crystal balls? Eye of Newt? I need answers!
No truth to the rumor that Sven-Goran Eriksson was seen waiting in line for his local Radio Shack to open...
And So It Begins...
The first 20 players have been called to Carson, California to begin training for the US - Mexico World Cup Qualifier on 2/11/09. So just who will be getting the nod to lace up against El Tri? May I have the envelope please?
(CUE DRUMROLL)
And the nominees are:
Goalkeepers:
Jon Busch (Chicago)
Will Hesmer (Columbus)
Matt Pickens (Colorado)
Defenders:
Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA)
Frankie Hejduk (Columbus)
Ugo Ihemelu (Colorado)
Chris Wingert (Salt Lake)
Marvell Wynne (Toronto)
Midfielders:
Brian Carroll (Columbus)
Ricardo Clark (Houston)
Eddie Gaven (Columbus)
Stuart Holden (Houston)
Jack Jewsbury (Kansas City)
Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA)
Robbie Rogers (Columbus)
John Thorrington (Chicago)
Forwards:
Brian Ching (Houston)
Kenny Cooper (Dallas)
Charlie Davies (Hammarby, Norway)
Chris Rolfe (Chicago)
Don't be shocked if the only players involved in any significant way are Kljestan, Ching, and Hejduk. Almost all of the starting 11, if not all of them, will be from the non U.S.-based players, who will begin arriving later this week. Still, given Klejstan and Ching's strong play, and the always gamey Hejduk's Columbus ties, it will be interesting to see the final roster. We'll keep you posted here.
Also, feel free to check out our podcast back on nordeckeusa.com for some pontificating on this and many other largely unrelated subjects.
